Sand Painting from the Southwest.
Third Grade Bean Art Work from 2004 to 2014.
It was a Third Grade tradition that lasted - until the creation of Lone Oak Intermediate School. Fourth Grade students used to create pottery bowls based on the Mimbers Indians, a tribe that lived and made pottery in the Southwest region (Southwest area of New Mexico). When Fourth Grade moved to the intermediate school, I passed down their pottery project to Third Grade which took the place of our
bean art - our version of sand painting.
Below are photos of Third Grades' collaborative efforts over a ten year time period. Each year Third Grade class would work in groups to create three large works of art based on sand paintings from the Southwest region. However, instead of using sand, students used a wide variety of beans. The images are based on animals and designs found on pottery in the Southwest region The images range from thunder birds, buffalo, insects, sun faces, bird people to basket designs. Images from such tribes as Mimbres, Pueblo, Zuni, Acoma, and Hopi. In 2007/2008, Third Grade created a three board design that made one very large eagle when put together. The eagle was based on totem poles designs from the Northwest Coast. In 2008/2009, Third Grade was putting on a Christmas program at the same time we were creating our bean art. So due to our schedule, all of Third Grade worked on one board which had three designs based on images found on baskets (weaving) in the Southwest. In 2011/12, we had a large class of Third Graders so we made four smaller designs based on insects.
I am very proud of my students and their work. This is a great opportunity to share what they have created.
Third Grade Students from the past, I thank you for all of your hard work and the memories.
